Oral Mucosa 3

Cheek

The buccal (cheek) mucosa is a typical lining mucosa with a non-keratinised epithelium, relatively short rounded epithelial ridges/dermal papillae and a sub mucosa. It attaches to the underlying muscle (just visible on this slide).

In restricted areas, particularly along the occlusal line, the buccal mucosa may become keratinised and the epithelial ridges may lengthen - evidence of this can be seen in this slide.
